Honors and Advanced Level Courses

Archbishop Hannan High School provides a strong, structured, and rigorous curriculum through which students strive to master the intellectual foundations essential for academic success. Our students prepare for the rigors of higher education through a college preparatory curriculum designed to meet the specific national standards for each subject but also emphasizing a more demanding knowledge and skill level required for success on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.

Honors Level Courses

All academic subjects at Archbishop Hannan are taught to a college preparatory standard. However, for those students prepared and able to engage the subject at a more demanding level and pace the school offers Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Mathematics, English, Science, and History. The honors level courses differ from their college prep (CP) level counterparts in the higher level of rigor and quantity of work demanded from the student. As a result, placement in an honors course is based specific criteria: the student's academic achievement in a prerequisite course, overall GPA, and teacher recommendation. Honors placement is competitive, as the potential number of students may exceed the seats available in honors sections.

Advanced Placement (AP) Level Courses

All AP courses follow a college-level curriculum prescribed by the College Board. Since these courses move at an accelerated pace that is demanding and will require additional hours of study, student's placement in an AP course is based on his or her academic achievement in a prerequisite course, overall GPA, and teacher recommendation. Because of the increased demands and expectations of the AP curriculum, students receive a higher (+1.0) weight in their class grade.

Advanced Placement classes culminate in a national exam given by the College Board. A passing score on the exam may qualify students for college credit or advanced standing as determined by the college of their choice. All AP students are expected to sit for the end of year AP exam. There is an additional fee for each AP exam. The school offers a variety of AP Level courses including:

Calculus AB Calculus BC
Statistics

English III

English IV Biology
American History World History
Psychology Human Geography
European History Government and Politics
Art IV Environmental Science
