Corona Virus Updates

Dear Archbishop Hannan Families,

I pray this note finds you enjoying the start to summer, but I do suspect that you have some continued anxiety about the pandemic and how Hannan will open in the fall. My main message to share, as I start out as head of school, is that we are eager and excited to start in person in August. While we suffer through Phase 2 a little longer, we are planning for a prudent, healthful start to the school year—Aug. 7 for 8th and 9th graders and Aug. 10 for all students. We believe that Catholic schools are an extension of family, and that God meets us in relationship—something that all of us have missed.

While some unknowns make planning difficult, we are in consultation with the state, parish, Archdiocese of New Orleans and our own community to get ready for the school year and some of the challenges to welcoming our Hawks back on campus. This includes planning for more hand washing stations across campus, sanitizing hard surfaces more frequently, feeding our students efficiently and safely at lunch, and many other topics to keep our students, faculty and staff healthy.

Some things we are planning on adding include temperature checks for our students and a protocol for mask wearing when social distancing is not possible. As we ramp up to full capacity, we’ll also prepare a game plan for athletic practices and contests—much of this has changed over the last few weeks, and will likely continue to change as we navigate this unprecedented time. We are prepared for virtual schooling, as our teachers did a phenomenal job of that last year, but pray that will not be necessary for the 2020-21 school year. Some lessons learned from our virtual instruction last year will carry forward, like sharing lessons virtually to students who may be too ill to come to school and tracking that progress with our student information systems.

I would ask for your prayers for our Hannan family and for those who have been impacted by the coronavirus itself or the economic fallout from the lockdown. I offer my thanks to those who have generously given to support families in financial need. Please know that you are all in my prayers daily and I look forward to meeting all of you at school in the fall.

Yours in Christ,

Chad Barwick
