College Counseling

Planning for College

Planning for one’s college career should begin during the Junior year. Students will take the PSAT, ACT and  SAT tests starting in their Junior year and may choose to retake the SAT or ACT as Seniors to improve their scores.  We encourage our students to remain open minded and to explore a variety of colleges to find the best fit for each student. This process will set the student up for academic and personal success in college.

The Guidance Department is committed to guiding parents and students through this process. Students and parents are encouraged to meet with their counselor to discuss any questions and concerns about the college application process.

Choosing the Right College

Each fall, Archbishop Hannan hosts a Parent-Student College Night for members of the Senior Class. During this informational evening, the Counseling staff provides important information for the college application process. Throughout the school year representatives from colleges and universities around the country conduct informational meetings with prospective students. The school also participates in the New Orleans College Fair sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Students and parents have an opportunity to meet with college representatives from across the United States.

During the latter part of a Junior’s second semester, the college selection process begins to gain momentum. Individual meetings with students and parents take place through the second semester of junior year, during the end of the summer, and throughout the first semester of senior year.

All students who wish to have a teacher(s) write a letter of recommendation, must download the Request for Recommendation form and give it to the teacher(s) to be completed.

The Application Process

The College Counseling Office at Archbishop Hannan High School provides students with support and resources throughout the application process. Applications and essays are reviewed, practice interviewing is available, and communication with colleges about the status of applications is undertaken. Students are encouraged to select a college where they will be happy, academically challenged, and successful.
